Second staircase touted in buildings over 30m

Government are likely to require a second staircase in new buildings taller than 30m - in the latest proposals being touted.

In response to the Grenfell Tower fire, the government has announced plans to require developers to install second staircases in all new housing blocks higher than 30 metres. This is a significant victory for fire safety advocates.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities proposed adding a mandate for a second staircase in new blocks above 30m, or roughly 10 storeys, in order to "make buildings safer" ,considered in the final hours just before the Christmas 2022 holiday break by department officials.
